Seminar Series 2011

Assoc. Prof. Christine Haase, The University of Georgia

A Taste of Things to Come: Otto Preminger, Gender, and Sexuality in the
Fifities

Weds 9 March
Robert Webster Building 327 from 4.00pm to 5.30pm

The dual language film production Otto Preminger made in the fifties, The
Moon Is Blue/Die Jungfrau auf dem Dach, was received quite differently by
the public on both sides of the Atlantic. The film caused a huge scandal in
the US because of its supposed immoral and indecent nature and the fact that
it didn¹t obey the Production Code, while it was hugely popular in Germany
with critics, authorities, and audiences alike. My talk tries to analyze the
socio-cultural context of the films and the challenges it posed to viewers
and authorities.

Christine Haase is Associate Professor of German Studies at the University
of Georgia in Athens, USA. Her research is in German national film and film
history, German-American film relations, and cinematic representations of
the Third Reich and the Holocaust. She is the author of When Heimat Meets
Hollywood: German Filmmakers and America 1985-2005.

ALL WELCOME!!
