We are pleased to invite you to our April research seminar, our first event for 2022!

Title - Unruly Bodies, Unruly Homes: The Representation of Housing on Australian TV as Discipline and Ideology

Speaker: Dr Donald Reid, The Media School, CAM, University of Tasmania

Abstract: The culture of home ownership has long been perpetuated on Australian TV. The “owner-occupier dwelling” is a familiar and potent symbol of middle-class stability, the object and goal of a strong work ethic and upward mobility. For the last two decades, media scholarship has situated housing as a disciplinary technology, encouraging a buy-in to neoliberal values. Using examples from recent non-scripted Australian programming - The Block (Channel 9), The Living Room (Network 10) and Struggle Street (SBS) - I re-evaluate the notion that housing representation is disciplinary, and add that it is also strongly ideological, perpetuating an ideal of Australian life unavailable to the populace it aims to represent.

Bio: Donald Reid is a lecturer at the UTAS Media School. He teaches across the program, in media studies, journalism and communications. His research interests include public health and media, education and media, and the media representation of nationalism and multiculturalism.
