Abstract: The culture of home ownership has long been perpetuated on Australian TV. The “owner-occupier dwelling” is a familiar and potent symbol of middle-class stability, the object and goal of a strong work
ethic and upward mobility. For the last two decades, media scholarship has situated housing as a disciplinary technology, encouraging a buy-in to neoliberal values. Using examples from recent non-scripted Australian programming - The Block (Channel 9), The
Living Room (Network 10) and Struggle Street (SBS) - I re-evaluate the notion that housing representation is disciplinary, and add that it is also strongly ideological, perpetuating an ideal of Australian life unavailable to the populace it aims to represent.
