Expression of Interest: HDR Scholarship in Documenting Loneliness in the Asian-Australian Diasporic Community at Deakin University

The Asian Media and Cultural Studies Network at Deakin University is seeking EOIs for a fully-funded PhD scholarship that will explore loneliness in Asian-Australian diasporic communities.

Project Details
The research project draws upon creative ethnography methodologies to explore how loneliness is experienced in Asian-Australian diasporic communities. The project will focus on the Chinese, Indian, and Japanese communities, and within the demographics of young people (aged 18-25). It will involve focus groups, interviews, story circles to record the way that young Asian-Australians experience loneliness. The data will be drawn upon to create a documentary, an exhibition, and a full length research monograph.

Length and amount of Scholarship
Successful candidates will receive scholarships of $28,092 p.a. for 3 years.
The scholarship will start in 2021 and is for full time applicants only.

What we are looking for
We are looking for individuals who are interested in pursuing an empirically-led PhD. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate an interest in Asian media and cultural studies including having worked in/with Asian-Australian communities. Knowledge of documentary filmmaking will also be an advantage.

Applicants are required to have a minimum Honours degree, completed with a First Class result, or equivalent. Due to the impact of COVID-19, we require prospective candidates to hold an Australian citizenship or international students that are currently in Australia.

About Us
The Asian Media and Cultural Studies network “undertakes comparative and cross-cultural work, particularly in the areas of digital media production, youth cultures, national and regional identities and cultures of fame. We explore Asian media and cultural studies from the ‘inside out’, reversing previous core-periphery binaries”.
