Art, Alain Badiou contends, is one of the fundamental conditions animating philosophy. This does not mean that art is somehow subordinate to philosophy; if anything, the relationship is the other way around. Art 'thinks' for itself, inasmuch as it produces truths, and the 'job' of philosophy is precisely that of grasping these and other truths and 're-thinking' them in such a way that they can be brought together in a single system. This talk will address several of the key ideas underlying Alain Badiou's philosophical and practical engagement with art, as well as its role in his own philosophical development.

Programme:
   Chair - Alex Ling
10:35 to 11:25 - Alain Badiou on Art and Philosophy
11:25 to 11:35 - Response by Justin Clemens
   11:35 to 12:00 - Question and Answer
