‘The Future of the Media’: two perspectives

John Butterworth, CEO of the Australian Interactive Media Industry Association
John Butterworth has been the CEO of AIMIA – the digital industry association for Australia – since July 2004. He originally joined the digital industry in mid-1996, and has held a variety of senior management roles in online and mobile publishing, marketing and advertising.
            Drawing on his near decade-long experience at the vanguard of the digital industry, John’s talk will address a number of points. Who are the content behemoths of the future? What are the current digital buzzwords – and why do they matter in media? How can we understand the coming generations of media consumers? And – an important question for university graduates - where are the jobs are going to be?

A/Prof David McKnight, Journalism and Media Research Centre, UNSW
David McKnight is a researcher interested broadly in politics, history, journalism and the media. He is the author of several books, including Rupert Murdoch: An Investigation of Political Power (Allen & Unwin, 2012). In 2012 he was the co-author of Journalism at the Speed of Bytes, a study commissioned by the Walkley Foundation for Journalism, on the future of journalism in view of the crisis in the business model of newspapers.
            David’s talk is underpinned by what he sees as a pressing problem for the future of media: given the collapse in the advertising model of newspapers, will a source exist in future that will produce the kind of journalism which usually underpins democracy?
