Dear all,
We would like to draw your attention to a forthcoming publication
opportunity: a special issue of /Discourse: Studies in the Cultural
Politics of Education/. A summary is below.
**
*The cultural politics of queer theory in educational research*
*Special Issue Overview*
In its statement of aims, /Discourse/ states that the journal seeks "to
contribute to contemporary debates on the new social, cultural and
political configurations that now mark education as a highly contested
but important cultural site".This journal is thus an apt location for a
special issue on the cultural politics surrounding the use of a highly
contested body of knowledge - queer theory in educational research.
This special issuedenotes our intention to disrupt cycles of thinking
about the place of queer theory in education research. We aim to
encourage dialogue about (a) the objects and subjects of queer research
(b) forms of politics incited by the use of queer theory in education,
and (c) the methodological approaches used by scholars when queer(y)ing.
The editors invite contributions from those who find queer theory
problematic, and/or past its use by date, as well as by those who
continue to see a productive place for queer research in education,
however that may be defined. We seek contributions about the sorts of
boundaries that are placed around queer research in education by
researchers themselves, and by peers, ethics committees, funding bodies
and university and government bureaucracies.
We also invite papers that consider how researchers identified with
education and queer theory experience and navigate this space in the
academy, and, papers on how the current academic climate shapes queer
research in education. What are the contemporary cultural politics of
doing queer theoretical work in different education spaces and places?
Is queer theory an important cultural site in education research? Or, is
queer theory in education irretrievablyoccidentalist and racist? In
short, we welcome explorations that might disrupt what we think we
already know about the 'place' of queer theory in education.
