Two-page proposals are due by May 31 2012.  Completed papers should be between 6,000-7,000 words and would be due 31st, August 2012.   All papers will be submitted to blind peer-review.  Publication is anticipated in early 2013.

Sex Education Special Issue: ‘Methodological Interventions in Sexualities Education Research’

This Special Issue focuses on methodological interventions in sexualities education. Since the late 1990s, there has been an upsurge in sexualities research focusing on young people, including studies that examine the intersections of sexualities and schooling. Over a similar period, changes in educational policies and approaches in many countries have supported the expansion of sexualities education. While much of this expansion in terms of research and provision has been focused on linkages to health, other work has sought to expand the proper investigative scope of sexualities education research beyond that disciplinary focus.

This Special Issue will prioritize sexualities education research that does not have a health focus. It acknowledges the broad reconfiguration of sexualities education that is currently underway through its productive interactions with mobile notions of time, space and place. This reconfiguration is driven by the view that in many ways research in sexualities education has become structured around the predictable repetition of a series of familiar critiques that are not usefully accommodating the proliferation and diversification of practice in the field. Examples of these familiar critiques include: the absence of pleasure, the evidence of a heteronormative bias and the value of comprehensive- vs. abstinence-based approaches.

This Special Issue aims to move beyond these somewhat circular debates by inviting papers that address sexualities education from the perspective of methodological intervention. How might the questions we ask and the methodologies and methods we utilize provoke different                 ways of thinking about, seeing and doing sexuality education? The issue will provide a way of identifying and defining methodological limitations that already shape what we can know about sexuality education, as well as imagining possibilities for innovation.

The context for research to be included goes beyond school settings, to include informal sites of learning about sexuality, including oral tradition, religious communities, peers and popular culture. We are particularly keen to include international contributions from beyond the Global North in order to facilitate conversation about the challenges and possibilities inherent in conducting research specifically related to sexualities and education. Our focus is not on the evaluation of sexuality education or on medical or epidemiological interventions, per se, unless they foreground methodological intervention. In these ways, this issue aims to mark out future methodological directions for sexualities education research.

Potential topics include methodological interventions that:

  *     Draw on decolonizing perspectives;

  *     Address religious and cultural differences;

  *     Engage cultural studies and media studies approaches; and

  *     Historicise sexualities, genders, youth and education.

Please attach an indicative list of references, plus a 200 word biography to your proposal.
