APRIL
Men and Mining: An Unsafe Mix – Dean Laplonge
When:  Friday 27 April
Time:    2-4 pm
Where:  Room 112, Morven Brown Building
The mining industry has a reputation for being tough. It’s an industry where any sign of weakness is openly critiqued. A mine site is no place for a “princess” or a “wuss”. Men working in mining often draw on the existence—perceived or real—of these feminised male types to maintain their identity as “real men”. And yet it’s real men who are getting injured and killed at work.

This seminar will discuss the research and work that has been done to date to encourage mining, and oil and gas, companies to take gender more seriously, particularly in regards to improving the safety of its men. Dr. Dean Laplonge is the Director of the cultural research consultancy Factive and an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in JRMC at UNSW.

The Classification Challenge - Terry Flew

“We live in an age of media convergence, where new devices and services are making it possible to access seemingly infinite volumes of media content from around the world. As more media is accessed from the home through high-speed broadband networks, and as people become more empowered to be the creators as well as consumers of content, the need to revise media content regulations for the 21st century has become increasingly apparent.

The Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) has completed the first comprehensive review of Australia’s classification scheme for 20 years. The ALRC’s Final Report, Classification – Content Regulation and Convergent Media, recommends fundamental reforms to make the national classification scheme more flexible and adaptive to technological change, while retaining core requirements for certain media content to be accompanied by classification information, based on decisions that reflect community standards. “ Terry Flew, Meeting the Classification Challenge in 21st Century Media, 2012.

In this seminar, Professor Terry Flew, one of Australia’s leading media and communications academics, will discusses meeting the classification challenge in 21st century media, including the question of how to develop platform-neutral content regulations in a convergent media environment. Terry Flew, Professor of Media and Communication at Queensland University of Technology, was recently Commissioner in charge of the Australian Law Reform Commission’s Review of the National Classification Scheme.

What are we DOING with media? – Nick Couldry

Where: University of NSW
What practices, and families of practices, are emerging in and around what we do with and in relation to media? As the object 'media' changes, so too are the forms of life that involve media. But to grasp what we are doing means taking a distance from the hype about 'new media' and asking broader questions about the new and continuing action-possibilities associated with today's mediated interfaces.
With his new book Media, Society, World: Social Theory and Digital Media Practice just off the press, Nick Couldry, Professor of Media and Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London, will be speaking about his latest ideas on “doing things with the media”.
