Psychoanalysis, Meaning, and Mind

Inaugural Lecture by Dr. John McClean to launch the Canberra Psychoanalytic
Centre

The lecture will focus on psychoanalysis as a method of discovering
unconscious meaning, and the significance of this for the development of
mind. Examples will be drawn from the realms of symptoms, dreams, play,
transference and counter-transference. Some of these themes will be
illustrated with reference to the film Lars and the Real Girl. A particular
focus will be the problem of the traumatised patient who cannot think
symbolically, and on the current understanding of factors that facilitate
this development.

Dr. John McClean is Vice-President of the Australian Psychoanalytical
Society, and a senior analyst with the Sydney Institute for Psychoanalysis.
He is active in teaching and training, and has a particular interest in the
relationships between psychoanalysis and literature and film.

The lecture will be followed by the inaugural meeting of the Canberra
Psychoanalytic Centre, which has been set up under the auspice of the
Australian Psychoanalytical Society.
