Indigenous Sovereignties

A symposium hosted by the Australian Studies Centre,
The University of Queensland

23 November 2004
Women's College, The University of Queensland

The Australian Studies Centre is organising a one-day symposium
dedicated to showcasing and sharing Indigenous Studies research across
the Faculty of Arts and the University.
In recent years there has been a proliferation of literature written
about Indigenous people, sovereignty and self-determination. Some of
this scholarship is concerned with formalizing self-determination,
demonstrating governments' contravention of United Nations' covenants
and discussing whether or not self-determination can be applied to
Indigenous peoples within nation states, while other scholarship engages
with western political theory as a means of explaining Indigenous claims
within western democracies.
This one day symposium brings together some of Indigenous Australia's
emerging and well known critical thinkers, who share a close but
skeptical interest in non-Indigenous representations of Indigenous
politics and sovereignty. The symposium offers an opportunity to engage
with Indigenous scholars who will present their respective work on
Indigenous sovereignties across a variety of contexts. The symposium is
designed to begin a different dialogue about Indigenous politics and
sovereignty by reconfiguring and challenging dominant perspectives.

Symposium themes include:
Indigenous Sovereignty and Popular Culture
Indigenous Sovereignty and the Writing of History
Indigenous Sovereignty and Nationhood
Indigenous Sovereignty and Politics

Confirmed speakers include:
Mr Philip Morrissey, The University of Melbourne
Associate Professor Tracey Bunda, University of Canberra
Mr Philip Falk, Griffith University
