many people are writing as if the Labor vote collapsed. It didn't.
QUITE
Thus, what appears to have been most
destructive for Labor in the election was the realighnment of the
conservative vote, concentrating it in two major parties--

AND BECAUSE THE TIMES PROBABLY FAVOUR ENCUMBENT GOVERNMENTS, PARTICULARLY IF
THE ECONOMY SEEMS STRONG ( GOVTS RARELY LOSE POWER IF THE ECONOMY SEEMS
STRONG), AND BECAUSE LABOUR HAD BEEN IN POWER FOR 13 YEARS PREVIOUSLY (
gOVTS MAY HAVE A SORT OF NATURAL LIFE), AND BECAUSE HOWARD EXPLOTED A
POLITICS OF FEAR - BIG 'S' SECURITY AS WELL AS SMALL 'S' SECURITY(QUALITY
OF LIFE ETC - BUT THEN SO TOO DID OUR LABOUR PREMIER) AND FOR ALL THE
REASONS JUDITH BRETT GAVE ETC ETC. ALSO HIP-POCKET VOTING IS HARDLY NEW _ IT
GOT THATCHER IN TO POWER - AND ANYWAY IF YOU TREAT THE ELECTORATE AS
CONSUMERS OUT TO GET THE BEST PRICE - THEN WHAT ELSE WOULD ONE EXPECT?
 > something that has been well-pointed out (though not this bluntly) by a
number of postrings.
LET"S KEEP BEING BLUNT AND ADD the following
'ALSO BECAUSE LABOR SEEMS SINGULARLY SHORT ON TALENT (BEAZLEY SHOULD HAVE
DONE SOMETHING ABOUT THIS WHEN HE TOOK OVER - CLEANED OUT THE PARTY< TRIED
TO BRING IN NEW PEOPLE) AND BECAUSE OF A LACKLUSTRE FRONT BENCH AND TOO MANY
LACKLUSTRE CANDIDATES, WHO SIMPLY HADN'T DONE THE FRONT LINE WORK( THE ALP
NEEDS TO CLEAN UP ITS PRE-SELECTION PROCESS, ESPECIALLY THE STRANGLEHOLD OF
RIGHT WING UNION FACTIONALISM, FAMILY DYNASTIES ETC) AND BECAUSE IT
PROBABLY NEEDS TO REDEFINE ITSELF AS A THOROUGHGOING SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY
(WHICH I SUPPOSE CREAN TRIED TO DO WITH NOT MUCH SUCCESS)
