since we've got on to the subject of fear ... here's two upcoming forums under the banner - who's afraid in the 'war on terror'? .... please circulate widely

PUBLIC FORUM: MANUFACTURING FEAR 
Who's afraid in the 'War on Terror'? 

When: Saturday, 13 November 2004, 9.30-4.30pm
Where: Room 429, Building 2, Entrance from Ground floor of Broadway Tower, University of Technology Sydney

Access: Disabled access + entry by donation; please email ahead if an interpreter is required. 

As terror laws and military strikes escalate, who gains and who loses from manactured fear? What are the consequences, both internationally and in Australia? How can advocacy groups - trade unions, community organisations, environmental and human rights campaigners - take up the issues, and act for justice?

FACING FEAR: community anti-racism work after September 11, 2001

A forum for people working with communities experiencing racism and anyone interested in anti-racist responses to the politics of fear. 

Organised by the UTS Shopfront

UTS Broadway
Friday 26 
November, 9am - 5pm

How can we speak back to the manufacturing of threat, fear and 'otherness'? What strategies have community organisations developed to combat racism during the 'war on terror'? Facing Fear will showcase cultural interventions including interfaith, community cultural development, media projects, community capacity-building and cross-cultural education.

Presenting:
- new research on experiences of racism after September 11, 2001
- innovative community projects addressing prejudice and fear directed at Muslim, Arab and Sikh Australians
- performance and short films 
- workshop on developing future projects and networks

Speakers include: Randa Kattan (Australian Arabic Communities Council), Inderjeet Singh (Australian Sikh Association), Nasya Bahfen (Muslim Women’s National Network of Australia), Lena Nahlous (Information and Cultural Exchange), Nada Roude (advisor to the Muslim Women’s Association and the Islamic Council of NSW), Zuleyha Keskin (Affinity In
tercultural Foundation).
