In-person talk followed by Q&A. All welcome.

Tuesday June 27, 2023
14:30-16:00 (AEST)
Robert Webster 327

The talk will focus on some of Lars von Trier’s basic uses of the haptic image throughout his film oeuvre. The haptic refers in my approach to art historian, Alois Riegl’s, differentiation of an optic sight/image and a haptic sight/image – and to Gilles Deleuze’s philosophic development of the term. Even though Von Trier has not refrained from using haptic images to underscore classic horror motives (evilness, subconscious or occult material), he always put has emphasis on the filmic materiality whether as cellulose acetate (in the Europe Trilogy), electronic signals (The Kingdom and The Idiots) or as a digital material (The Depression Trilogy). The talk will focus on how irony, humor and anxiety are composed as affective tonalities so to speak within the image understood as a signaletic material – and how Lars von Trier with this emphasis on affective composition has brought a renewed interest in the potentialities of film as a medium.

Bodil Marie Stavning Thomsen is a Danish citizen, who grew up on a farm in Jylland. She studied Nordic Language and Literature with a special interest in media aesthetics at Aarhus University. Her PhD dissertation was on Hollywood melodrama 1920-40 with a special emphasis on Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich (published in Danish in 1997). In 2015 she became Professor at School of Communication and Culture, Aarhus University. She has been a chief investigator on two collaborative projects: “New Forms of Realism” (Denmark, 1999-2003) and “Affects, Interfaces, Events” (Denmark, 2015-21) and a partner investigator and grant applicant on the Canadian based research project “Immediation: Art, Media and Event” (Canada, 2013-2021). This project introduced her to Andrew Murphie (Honorary Associate Professor), with whom she is currently working while visiting UNSW as a Visiting Professorial Fellow (April-July 2023).

She has published in the fields of film, video and digital interface studies, and her specific interest is haptic visuality and affect studies related to media and art. Recent publications, contributions to and editorial work include: Lars von Trier’s Renewal of Film 1984-2014: Signal, Pixel, Diagram (2018); Immediation I & II (2019); “The Play of Iconicity in Lars von Trier’s The House That Jack Built” in NECSUS (spring 2020); Transmedia Directors: Artistry, Industry and New Audiovisual Aesthetics (2020); Affects, Interfaces, Events (2021); A Cultural History of the Avant-Garde in the Nordic Countries Since 1975 (2022).

This talk is hosted by the School of the Arts and Media<https://www.unsw.edu.au/arts-design-architecture/our-schools/arts-media> and the UNSW Media Futures Hub<https://mediafutureshub.org/>.
