Dear Colleagues,
As we look back at another year beset by pandemic disruptions, I wanted to take this opportunity update you all on some key activities of the CSAA, and to celebrate some of the successes within the CSAA community during 2021.
Undoubtedly the most significant of these successes is the resilience and activism of this very community of scholars. The CSAA was first established as a formal association in 1992, and while Cultural Studies as a discipline has a longer history in Australasia, next year nonetheless marks the 30th anniversary of the CSAA itself.
In the midst of these gloomy and turbulent times, it seems opportune to seize the moment to celebrate this endurance. We look forward to doing so collectively over the course of next year, so stay tuned for further announcements!
The ongoing importance of Cultural Studies as a field of research has been recognised in the latest rounds of the ARC, and we would like to congratulate the recipients of the following recently-awarded grants (in FoR 2002).
In the Discovery Indigenous scheme, announced last month: Dr Ali Baker, Dr Simone Tur, Associate Professor Katerina Teaiwa, Mrs Faye Blanch, Dr Natalie Harkin, Dr Cindy Bennett and Dr Romaine Moreton (Flinders), for the project “Re-imagining Humanities through Indigenous Creative Arts”; and Dr Brian Martin, Mr Jefa Greenaway, Associate Professor Meghan Kelly, Dr Russell Kennedy, Assistant Professor Howard Munroe and Assistant Professor Jason Baerg (Monash), for the project “Protocols for Indigenous-led creative practice.”
There were also two DECRAs announced in August: Dr Vicki Couzens (RMIT), for the project “Mother Tongue: Language revitalisation through immersive practice” and Dr Sophie Chao (Sydney), for the project “Human-kangaroo relations: Reconciling perceptions, knowledges and practices.”
Additionally, in October, long-term friend of the CSAA, Professor Katherine Albury (Swinburne) was awarded a Future Fellowship for the project “Digital and data literacies for sexual health policy and practice.”
Finally, keynote speaker from the 2019 CSAA annual conference, Professor Jean Burgess (QUT) has just been elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
Please join me in congratulating everyone above on their wonderful achievements!
Members of the CSAA will have received recent updates regarding plans for the 2021 CSAA annual conference from the indomitable organisers Panizza Allmark, Jude Elund, Jess Taylor and James Hall. You will receive further updates on this very soon. In the interim, for more information see the conference website: https://www.csaa2021conference.com<https://www.csaa2021conference.com/>
Finally, members who would like to participate in or contribute to the 30thanniversary celebration for the CSAA are warmly invited to contact me at: e.stephens at uq.edu.au<mailto:e.stephens at uq.edu.au>
With best wishes and hopes for a better 2022,
