Dear CSAA Colleagues,

Here are some pieces written by colleagues at Charles Sturt University contextualising the recent protests within Indigenous experiences of Australian history.

In this piece, Professor Sue Green discusses the School of Indigenous Australian Studies approach to Australian history as a shared history that must include Indigenous experiences, knowledges, and expertise:

In this piece by Professor Stan Grant Jnr, he discusses some of the Indigenous resistance to colonisation and government policies and the role of Black anger in facilitating survival:

Professor Grant mentions a significant black lives matter protest in Australia, the 1938 Day of Mourning that took place on Invasion Day. This protest was co-organised by the Aborigines Progressive Association, co-founded by William Ferguson, from Dubbo in Wiradjuri Country. The Association did an enormous amount of work collecting testimony from Indigenous Australians in this Country and their experiences with Protectionism and the corruption of Protection Boards. After many years, a statue of Ferguson was recently installed on the main street in Dubbo where pedestrians walk past in his eyeline as he continues to orate Indigenous justice:

Finally, there's an interesting knowledge economy happening at the moment with book sales of Indigenous writers blowing up:

Kind regards,
Holly.
