Call for EOIs - Listening beyond Liberalism: PG/ECR workshop
Wednesday 28 November, 1.30 - 4.30pm
University of New South Wales, Sydney
Convened by Tanja Dreher (UNSW) and Leah Bassel (Roehampton)
The workshop on 'Listening beyond Liberalism' is open to postgraduate and early career researchers across a range of disciplines. The workshop will discuss the limitations of a liberal politics of listening (including therapeutic and managerial frameworks) and explore theorisations and practices that push beyond the liberal frame, including those that engage with settler colonialism, coloniality and decoloniality, intersectionality, critical disability studies, sound studies and more.
Requirements: Participants will be expected to prepare two set readings on the topic and a short overview of their own work.
Expressions of Interest: Interested applicants should submit an Expression of Interest, including an overview of current research (300 words max), a bio (300 words max) and a brief statement on the relevance of the workshop theme. Convenors: Tanja Dreher is an ARC Future Fellow, UNSW Scientia Fellow and Associate Professor in Media at the University of New South Wales. Her research focuses on the politics of listening in the context of media and multiculturalism, Indigenous sovereignties, feminisms and anti-racism. Tanja’s current research project focuses on the politics of listening in response to community and activist media.
Leah Bassel is Professor of Sociology at the University of Roehampton, UK, where her research interests include the political sociology of migration, intersectionality and citizenship. Her books include Refugee Women: Beyond Gender versus Culture (Routledge, 2012), The Politics of Listening: Possibilities and Challenges for Democratic Life (Palgrave, 2017), and Minority Women and Austerity: Survival and Resistance in France and Britain co-authored with Akwugo Emejulu (Policy Press 2017).
