Dear CSAA-Forum list members,

Experiences among Transgender and Gender Diverse People whilst Incarcerated in Queensland Prisons

We are seeking formerly incarcerated transgender, gender diverse and non- binary people willing to discuss their time on the inside. This research project (funded by the former HIVFQ and has full USQ Human Ethics Approval - H17REA147) aims to identify transgender and gender diverse specific needs that are not currently being met and ways to improve access to quality health services and management practices within Queensland correctional facilities. It seeks to explore this cohort’s thoughts and opinions relating to their lived experiences during incarcerations such as:

·      General living conditions and environment;

·      Treatment by correctional staff-members;

· Gender affirming health care provided or not?

·      Other/personal experiences
This study will likely be of significant benefit to transgender and gender diverse prisoner community members as well as prison management and staff. This may likely lead to better appreciation of the relevance in developing and/or enhancing educational programs, health promotion and policy procedures aimed at improving the lives of transgender and gender diverse prisoners whilst incarcerated. Through ‘best practice’ strategies this study also aims to more effectively prepare prison staff for their roles in supporting this cohort of prisoners, and also by enhancing prisoners’ security, safety, health and wellbeing.

Confidential interviews (in person or via phone) are conducted and participants will receive a $30 gift card in appreciation of their time and contributions.

For further information about this project or to participate please contact Dr Annette Bromdal (+61 7 4631 1609) or Dr Amy Mullens (+61 7 3812 6153), Principal Investigators, University of Southern Queensland or email projectinfo at usq.edu.au.
