CFP: IAFOR Journal of Media, Communication and Film Volume 5

Theme: Challenging and Critiquing Reality

>From Plato and Aristotle to Bazin and Baudrillard, reality and realism have been topics of reflection, debate, articulation and re-articulation in (among other fields) philosophy, media, communication, and film. Photographers and documentary filmmakers, theorists, and writers have pondered the indexical connections between image and mechanical reproduction; the construction of subjective reality; and the attempt to capture reality. In contemporary journalism ‘fake news’ is a topic of (occasionally politicized) discussion. While television genres capitalise on a ‘reality’ that is often more akin to fiction than fact.

This issue invites papers that reflect upon, challenge, and critique conventional notions of Reality in contemporary media, film, politics and culture. Authors are encouraged to consider the implications of uses of ‘reality’ within specific socio-political and cultural contexts.

Topics can include, but are not limited to:

  *   Reality in celebrity culture
  *   Aesthetics of reality
  * Reality, realism, and on screen representation
  * Reality, narrative and lived experience
  * Class, gender, race and reality
  *   Constructing reality
  *   De-constructing reality
  *   Reality and journalism
  *   Reality and documentary
  *   Reality and film
  *   Reality and television
  *   Reality and photography
