Media at Sydney Seminar, Friday 27 May, 3-5 PM

INTERFACES, ARCHITECTURES, BODIES: HISTORICIZING AND THEORIZING CULTURAL TECHNIQUES & MEDIA INFRASTRUCTURES

Understanding the material, infrastructural dimension of contemporary media culture requires an engagement with a larger history of technology, one filled with interdisciplinary articulations that bring together cultural studies, art history, and architecture with the emerging frameworks of ‘media theory’ and ‘media philosophy’. This seminar examines Bernhard Siegert’s theorization of ‘cultural techniques’. Yiğit Soncul, Grant Bollmer and Maren Koehler will discuss the various ways they use Siegert to expand the focus of Anglophone media studies, embracing interdisciplinary crossings to examine how affects, bodies, identities, and spaces are shaped and produced by past and present ‘cultural techniques’.

Grant Bollmer is a Lecturer of Digital Cultures in the Department of Media and Communications at the University of Sydney. His book, Inhuman Networks: Social Media and the Archaeology of Connection, is forthcoming from Bloomsbury in August.

Yiğit Soncul is a PhD candidate and visiting lecturer at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton, currently visiting the Department of Media and Communications of the University of Sydney on a Worldwide Universities Network fellowship.

Maren Koehler is a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Architecture, Design, and Planning at the University of Sydney. Along with teaching and co-curating exhibitions, Maren has worked as an architect in Berlin, Hong Kong, New York, Beijing and Shanghai.
