We are pleased to announce our final seminar for the year, to be held in
collaboration with Swinburne Indigenous Studies. Please join us to hear
from Cholena Smith, a member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation of Long
Island, New York who is currently a Visiting Research Scholar with the
Swinburne Institute for Social Research and Swinburne Indigenous Studies.

*Presenter*: Cholena Smith of the Shinnecock Indian Nation of Long Island,
New York
*Title*: Shinnecock Wadtauatonqussonk: Telling Shinnecock’s Story on
History and Contemporary Issues
*Abstract*: As one of the original peoples of Long Island, New York, the
Shinnecock Indian Nation endured the impact of settler-colonialism since
the 1500s. Cholena will explore contemporary ways in which Shinnecock have
worked to strengthen cultural identity living on a small reservation set
aside within their original territories in 1703. She will discuss
Shinnecock history and culture, and provide insight into contemporary
issues such as their struggle for and achievement of federal recognition
and sovereignty between 1978 and October of 2010.
Please join us after the seminar for drinks and nibbles to celebrate the
end of the year. After the seminar, the conversation continues over dinner
at a local restaurant in Hawthorn. This is free for full-time SISR PhD
students.

Details of presenter
*Cholena Smith* <https://www.linkedin.com/pub/cholena-smith/b0/163/474> is
a member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation of Long Island, New York and a
graduate of Stony Brook University in Anthropology and Sociology. She uses
her academic skills entwined with knowledge learned from family and
community elders to preserve the tangible and intangible culture of
Shinnecock. Formerly the Education Program Manager of the Shinnecock Nation
Cultural Centre and Museum, Cholena develops programs and projects with the
Shinnecock Cultural Resources Department to educate the public on
Shinnecock heritage and critical environmental issues. She is currently a
Visiting Research Scholar with the Swinburne Institute for Social Research
and Swinburne Indigenous Studies.
