SWARM 2015 Symposium on Everyday Social Media

GTFO – Empowered Users, Objective Violence and the Governance of Participatory Media

9.30-4.30pm
Friday 4th September 2015
University of Sydney, Australia

Increasing online participation is now a political, cultural and economic goal for government, health, education and creative industries. Yet the everyday violence and exclusion that plays out on social media and other participatory online forums deters many from self-expression and interaction. It casts doubt on the capacity of institutions to facilitate effective public dialogue, and raises doubts about the utility of speech codes and moderation frameworks. In conjunction with the SWARM 2015 conference <http://swarmconference.com.au/> on online community management this one day symposium brings together academics and online media professionals working on innovative, systematic strategies to better govern social media participation, to tackle the abuse of speech rights online and support more inclusive user communities.

Hosted by the Department of Media and Communications and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences’ Everyday Social Media Research Group, the symposium has a critical cultural concern with the structural and socio-cultural factors that underpin anti-social behaviours online. In this it will consider both the visible manifestations of hate speech and dimensions of Žižek calls objective violence – symbolic aggression and the systemic, hidden relations of dominance and exploitation that underpin it.

Guest speakers include Mia Garlick, head of Communication and Policy at Facebook Australia & New Zealand, Rod McGuiness, ABC Radio’s Social Media Editor, Daad Soufi, head of Regulatory and Legal at IAB Australia, and Marc Bryant and Jenyfer Locke from the Mindframe initiative. The symposium will include papers on feminist digilantism, youth responses to cybersafety campigns, legal responses to revenge porn, the psychological impact of moderation work, and the regulation of online identities — as well as an industry panel on social innovation in community governance. A full program is available on the registration site: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/gtfo-empowered-users-objective-violence-and-the-governance-of-social-media-tickets-17025114576

The symposium will be held on Friday 4th September from 9.30-4pm in the Law Lounge, level 1, New Law Building, University of Sydney Camperdown campus. Due to building works, access is via the New Law Annexe or via the Barff Rd entrance to the Law Library on level 0, and up the steps to level 1, and the concourse to the Law Lounge. A map of the building can be found here: http://sydney.edu.au/law/about/docs_pdfs/Law%20Faculty%20Teaching%20Spaces.pdf

Morning tea, lunch and post event refreshments will be provided for registered participants.
