Visual Text Analytics:

Computational Methodologies for Analysing Communications

Dr Daniel Angus (University of Queensland)

Visual Text Analytics are new e-research technologies for visually examining and interpreting a range of text-based communications from news stories to tweets. In this talk Dr Daniel Angus presents the application of two visual text analytic technologies (Leximancer and Discursis) to a range of case studies including tracking news coverage of controversial issues (coal seam gas), media discourse analysis (audience discussion shows) and social media data analysis (Twitter during a political campaign). The presentation will cover how the techniques automatically process text to build a statistically-grounded language model; how they are able to identify the most salient concepts and their inter-relationships, and how they can be used to highlight participant interactions around specific topics over the time-course of a communication dataset. As well as indicating these tools' potential uses in a variety of qualitative studies, the talk will explore how these techniques can be tailored to provide quantitative measures including measurements of conceptual prominence; conceptual consistency; and concept novelty.

Dr Daniel Angus is a Lecturer with the University of Queensland in the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering and the School of Journalism and Communication. His teaching and research is focused on information visualisation, text analytics, and computational social science. From 2008 to 2011 he was a member of the ARC Special Initiative, Thinking Systems. This project involved researchers from many different disciplines such as Biology, Neuroscience, Psychology and Computer Science. Dr Angus’ role within the project was to explore how conceptual information is processed and stored by mammals and use any insights gained for the development of conceptual mapping tools. An outcome of this research was the Discursis text analytic tool which is a useful way to visualise and obtain metrics from conversation transcripts.
