These two MQRES Scholarships are part of the ARC Future Fellowship project
(FT130100334) on Cinematic Ethics awarded to Dr Robert Sinnerbrink. This
project is a study of cinema as a medium of ethical experience and critical
reflection. It brings together philosophy, film theory, aesthetics, and
ethical theory, to understand how film can evoke ethical experience through
images and narrative. Although recent work in philosophy of film has begun
exploring the question of ethics, there is comparatively little theoretical
reflection on what this means: how do movies evoke and express ethical ideas?
How can they reveal the complexities of a moral or political situation?
What role does our emotional involvement play in this process? Can the
aesthetic elements of film be ethically significant? The successful PhD
candidates will contribute to exploring these and related questions in
order to theorise how film, through its power of aesthetic presentation,
can exercise our moral imaginations and enhance our ethical understanding.

The successful candidates would be expected to produce research with a
complementary yet stand-alone focus with respect to the research project
outlined above.

The scholarships must be taken up by second semester 2014.

Initial inquiries should be directed to Dr. Robert Sinnerbrink, email:
robert.sinnerbrink at mq.edu.au, phone: +61 (0)2 9850 9935 before submitting
