ABOUT

in 1980, Media, Culture & Society published an article by Stuart Hall entitled 'Cultural Studies: Two Paradigms'. As a way of remembering Stuart, this seminar will revisit his seminal contribution to the formation of the field via his contribution to MCS. Professor Scannell will review the article, situating it in the wider context of the moment in which and for which it was written. He will consider which paradigm Hall evidently prefers and then the one which Scannell himself prefers (they don't agree). The point, of course, is not to grub up old arguments and to settle old scores, but rather to remember that the field was contested in its formative moment; and that the tensions of the previous generation, between 'preferred readings' of its agenda and methodologies, remain unresolved to this day.

BIO

Professor Paddy Scannell <http://www.lsa.umich.edu/comm/facultystaff/faculty/scannellpaddy_ci> works at the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Michigan. He is the founding editor of Media, Culture & Society, which began in 1979 and is now published eight times yearly. His most recent publication is Television and the Meaning of 'Live' (Polity, 2014).

Professor Scannell's visit to Brisbane is funded by CQUniversity. Whilst here, he will also be participating in the 'Media Talk' symposium co-hosted by Griffith University and CQUniversity.

Promoting the dynamic research culture of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as foregrounding the work of local, national and international scholars by staging public lectures, seminars and symposia throughout the year.
