Workshop Description:
‘Culture’ is the middle within which we always begin. A schizoanalysis of culture seeks to critically examine this middle in a manner free from the dictates of identity, the telos of ‘cultural policy’ and other totalising forces. It searches for, to borrow Deleuze’s description of Bourdieu’s project, a way out of the ‘closed, exchangist cycles’ of so-called realist cultural sociologies. Along these lines, the subject is not a substance operated upon by the well-intentioned, but a project of individuation. This workshop will explore and test out a range of schizoanalytic approaches to culture through the work of Deleuze and Guattari. Topics to be addressed will include the schizoanalysis of film, teen sexting, pornography, online fraud and news as an assemblage.
