Due to recent expansion, the Film Programme at Victoria University of
Wellington has increased its research specialisms and capacity for
supervising PhD students. Research expertise includes, but is not limited

Associate Professor Thierry Jutel: Contemporary Cinema; Digital Cinema
Aesthetics and Production; Cinema and Landscape; Cinema as Cultural Object

Dr. Alfio Leotta: Film-Tourism; New Zealand Cinema; Global Hollywood;
Italian Cinema

Dr. Miriam Ross: 3D Cinema; Latin American Cinema; Cinema Industry; New
Digital Technologies

Professor Kirsten Thompson: Animation; Colour; New Zealand, Pacific and
Classical Hollywood Cinema

Dr. Paul Wolffram: Documentary; Ethnographic Film; Production; 3D Cinema

Students may also consider staff in the Media Studies Programme as
potential collaborators in the supervision of doctoral work. Full staff

Located in the heart of Wellington, the Film Programme offers unique
opportunities to make use of resources at The New Zealand Film Archive,
National Archives New Zealand, Te Papa National Museum, The Alexander
Turnbull Library and various film institutions in the city.

Candidates with a strong academic background can apply for Victoria
Doctoral Scholarships. These scholarships are open to New Zealand and
international students. They include tuition fees and an annual stipend.
