The Australian counterculture is often characterised as an imitation of that in the USA and Western Europe. Yet even in the most significant formative moments, this can be seen as an over-simplification.

The 1973 Nimbin Aquarius Festival, often referred to as Australia's Woodstock, had no line-up of music industry stars. Instead 'survival' was its theme and for 10 days 'the people are the festival' was its program.

Graeme Dunstan, Festival Director, writes that 'compared to Woodstock and the rock festivals that followed, the the 5000 strong Aquarius Festival was small in number and understated in form. Yet deep was the discourse and many were the ideas and fancies which found shape and nurture in its thrall. Those ten days in May 1973 gave form and substance to the counterculture of the times in a pattern never seen before.'

'Aquarius and beyond: 40 years on' is a 2-day conference on 23 and 24 May 2013 at Nimbin Hall that revisits and critically examines this event, its aftermath, and the Australian counterculture then and now.

The program and online registration is now open for 'Aquarius and beyond: 40 years on' at http://sassevents.scu.edu.au/aquarius
