A philosophical dialogue between Martin Bresnick

and Nikolas Kompridis.



Does music have need of philosophy? Or does music speak for itself, and whatever it is

that musiccannot say of and from itself, evade philosophy altogether?



Where is music after modernism? Does it still have a coherentand distinctive purpose?



How has the emergence of world musics decentred musical modernism?



Did modernism in philosophy and modernism in music share some common assumptions and attitudes?



After modernism, do philosophy and music share some common challenges?



In light of musical and philosophical pluralism, what do philosophers

and composers owe their students?



Does the new matter anymore? Did the project of the "new" become

meaningless after the demise of modernism? If so, to what does

contemporary art music aspire?

Martin Bresnick, Nikolas Kompridis, and Lisa Moore.




Martin Bresnick is Professor of Composition and Director of the

Composition Program at Yale University. Besides having received many

prizes and commissions, he is also recognized as an influential teacher of

composition. Students from every part of the globe and of virtually every

musical inclination have been inspired by his critical encouragement:

Nikolas Kompridis is Professorial Fellow in Philosophy at the University

of Western Sydney, and the author Critique and Disclosure: Critical Theory

between Past and Future (MIT 2006) and the editor of Philosophical

Romanticism (Routledge 2006) and The Aesthetic Turn in Political Theory

(Continuum 2012). He also studied composition with Martin Bresnick

at Yale, and was the founder and director of the Canadian new music

ensemble, Sound Pressure.



Lisa Moore is an Australian pianist who lives in New York and teaches

piano at Wesleyan University. She has been referred to as "The queen of

avant-garde piano" by the New Yorker magazine. Lisa Moore has released 6

solo discs and over 30 collaborative discs (Sony, Nonesuch, DG, CRI, BMG,
