Call for participants
Postgraduate Master Class with Professor Sophie Watson (Open University, UK), Professor Stephanie Hemelryk Donald and Professor Maurizio Marinelli
RMIT University, Melbourne, July 20, 2012
www.rmit.edu.au/mediacommunication

Funded by the Australian Centre on China in the World at ANU and the RMIT University School of Media and Communication Research Development Fund

RMIT University School of Media and Communication invites expressions of interest from doctoral
students to participate in a one day master class. Professors Watson, Donald and Marinelli will be
leading a discussion on social, cultural and spatial transformation in China and Europe through the
case study of urban markets.
Markets are primarily treated as sites for the exchange of economic goods and tradable products.
This master class positions them as transformational places, which operate in transnational/
regional flows of goods and labour, but which are also subject to the political, historical, social and
semantic structures of their location. Markets are places where one can see the emergence and
negotiation of collective and individual identities, materialised within a set of implicit and explicit
traditions and cultural practices.

We especially welcome applications from doctoral students working in China studies, as well as
those working in media and cultural studies on topics including but not limited to:

- cultural and social transformation in China and Europe
- flows of commodities, people and markets
-space and place in cities
-urban social and spatial economies
- comparative case studies in these fields

Spaces are limited and travel bursaries of $500 will be available to successful applicants.
Please send a one page EOI including your research interests, a brief bio, and relevant track
record.

Applications close on 16 January, 2012.
To submit applications and for further details please contact Kirsten Seale: email: kirsten.seale at rmit.edu.au.
