MMCCS Public Lecture – Guest SpeakerDetailsDate: 19th May 2011Time: 4:00pm-6:00pmLocation: Theatre 4, Building E7B, Macquarie UniversityTopic: "Researching the Live Music Industry in the UK: Some findings"Speaker: Professor Martin Cloonan (University of Glasgow)Respondent: Dr. Denis Crowdy (Macquarie University) About the TopicThis talk reports the findings of a three year research project which examined the history and institutional practices of the UK's live music industry from 1950 to the present day. Drawing upon extensive field work (including over 100 interviews) and historical analysis, the paper seeks to outline some of the key issues arising from the research.The project will result in a three volume history (to be published by Ashgate) and I will present both my own areas of interest and key findings from the other three members of the research team. Overall I hope to give some insight in to a sector of the music industries which is now economically dominant and thus to challenge previous accounts of the music industries which have tended to privilege the recording sector. About the Speakers1. Professor Martin Cloonan:Martin is a Professor of Music Politics at the University of Glasgow.  His research focuses on the politics of Popular Music - an area in which he has a number of publications - and in issues concerning censorship and freedom of expression. Martin is the author of a number of books including: Dark Side of the Tune: Popular Music and Violence (with Bruce Johnson) (2008, Ashgate), Popular Music and the State in the UK (2007, Ashgate), Banned! Censorship of Popular Music in Britain: 1967-1992 (1996, Arena).He is the editor of: Popular Music Censorship in Africa (with Michael Drewett) (2006, Ashgate) and Policing Pop (with Reebee Garofalo) (2003, Temple University Press). Martin is a member of the editorial boards of Popular Music, and Popular Music and Society, the British Journal of Music Education, Perfect Beat and Beitrage zur Popularmusikforschung.2. Dr Denis Crowdy:Denis worked as a musician in Perth before travelling to Papua New Guinea where he taught music at the University of Papua New Guinea from 1992-2000. He has been at Macquarie University since 2000 and currently teaches units in guitar and audio engineering. His research has focused on popular musics in Melanesia, and he is completing work from a 4 year ARC funded grant exploring music industries in that region.His current work explores links between music technology and the aesthetics of sound recording. He is the co-editor of the journal Perfect Beat, and is the Chair of the International Council for Traditional Music's Study Group on the Musics and Dance of Oceania.
