CHED Masterclass with Nikki Sullivan

The Centre for the History of European Discourses is pleased to announce it will be hosting a masterclass, to be held by Associate Professor Nikki Sullivan (Macquarie University), on Friday, October 8, from 2-5 pm.

About the Presenter

Nikki Sullivan is associate professor of Critical and Cultural Studies at Macquarie University, where she is also the Director of the Somatechnics Centre.  She is the author of A Critical Introduction to Queer Theory and Tattooed Bodies: Subjectivity, Textuality, Ethics, Pleasure as well as co-editor (with Samantha Murray) of Somatechnics: Queering the Technologisation of Bodies. 

About the masterclass 

The term 'somatechnics' indicates an approach to corporeality which considers bodily-bieng as always already bound up with a variety of technologies, techniques and technics; that is, as Bernard Stiegler has argued as length, necessarily technical. Here, techné refers to the processes that craft bodily-being in specific ways, and carries with it the suggestion of the (oftentimes tacit) transmission of values, standards, skills, practices, and so on. Think, pace de Lauretis and Butler, of technologies of gender, or of Foucault's account of the techniques of the self that are constitutive of ethical citizenship in ancient Greco-Roman culture.

The aim of this master class is to provide an overview of the ways in which the term somatechnics has been deployed, and to give participants an opportunity to discuss the possible uses and benefits of the concept for their own research.
