The company that dominated the early development of wireless in Australia,
Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia), or AWA, was always headquartered in
Sydney. When it was formed in 1913, the NSW capital had just taken over as
the country's most populous city, but Melbourne was still home to much of
corporate Australia, the federal Parliament and the monopoly provider of
postal and telecommunications services, the Postmaster General's Department.

In this talk Jock Givens will explore the reasons behind this trend and the
impact for the Australian media business.

Jock Given is the author of Turning off the Television: broadcasting's
uncertain future and America's Pie: trade and culture after 9/11.

He recently submitted a doctoral thesis in the Department of History at the
University of Melbourne about Ernest Fisk, managing director of AWA from1917
to 1944 and EMI in London from 1945 to 1951.

He is Professor of Media and Communications at Swinburne University's
Institute for Social Advisor at the Australian Film Commission and Director
Legislation and Industry Economics at the federal Department of Transport
and Communications.
