Call for Papers:
Popular Communication: International Journal of Media and Culture
As the newly named editors for Popular Communication, we would like to renew
the journals’ open call for papers. Please note the new subtitle to the
journal as well as the new editorial board (below).
The journal provides a forum for the scholarly investigation, analysis, and
dialogue on communication symbols, forms, phenomena, and strategic systems
of symbols within the context of contemporary popular culture across the
globe. Popular Communication publishes articles on all aspects of popular
communication, examining different media such as television, film, new
media, print media, radio, music, and dance; the study of texts, events,
artifacts, spectacles, audiences, technologies, and industries; and
phenomena and practices, including, but not limited to, fan, youth and
subcultures, questions of representation, digitalization, cultural
globalization, spectator sports, sexuality, advertising, and consumer
culture. The journal welcomes diverse theoretical and methodological
perspectives within the tradition of media, communication, and cultural
studies as well as interdisciplinary research in and across related
disciplines.

communication is defined as popular culture that is mediated by or related
to mass media including but not limited to the Internet, youth culture,
representation, fandom, film, sports, spectacles, the digital revolution,
sexuality, advertising/consumer culture, television, radio, music,
magazines, and dance. The journal welcomes diverse theoretical and
methodological perspectives within the tradition of media, communication,
and cultural studies. A manuscript may not be sent out for review if it is
deemed inappropriate for the journal. Submitted papers should be 5,000-9,000
words in length (inclusive of all elements).
Submissions: Submissions should be emailed (as attachments) to Cornel
Sandvoss, C. Lee Harrington, and Jonathan Gray, at
popularcommunication at surrey.ac.uk. Only original manuscripts submitted to
Popular Communication will be considered for publication. The cover letter
should include a statement that the manuscript is not currently under
consideration elsewhere, is not being submitted elsewhere, and has not been
published elsewhere, in whole or in part.
Manuscript Preparation: Manuscripts should be prepared according to the
guidelines of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological
Association (5th ed.). Double space all material, including title page,

figure captions, and footnotes. The title page should include the title of
the manuscript; names and affiliations of all authors; contact information
including address, telephone and fax numbers, and email address of the
corresponding author; and a running head of not more than 48 letters and
spaces. Only the title page should contain identifying information. The
second page should include the manuscript title, an abstract of 100 to 150
words, and a list of key words for use in indexing. Manuscripts that do not
follow this format will be returned to authors for re-formatting prior to
being sent out for review.
Peer Review: Submitted articles undergo masked peer review. Authors should
take care that the manuscript contains no clues as to identity. The normal
review period is three months.
Permissions: Authors are responsible for the content of their work and for
obtaining permission from copyright owners to use a lengthy quotation (500
words or more), to reprint or adapt a table or figure published elsewhere,
or to reprint photographs or other copyrighted or trademarked images.

granting nonexclusive world rights in all languages for use in the article
and in future editions.
Production Notes: All text files should be saved in Microsoft Word, and any
visuals should be saved as separate files. Authors must submit camera ready
copy for any artwork and non-text-based figures. Upon acceptance, copyright
for the entire work must then be assigned to Lawrence Erlbaum Associates,
Inc., Publishers. Once files are copyedited and typeset into page proofs,
authors read proofs to correct errors and answer editors' queries.

and non-academic books pertaining to popular communication and popular
culture. Reviewers receive one copy of the issue in which the review
appears. Additional printed copies are not available. Please direct all
