Out of Context: Thinking Cultural Studies Diasporically

Grant Farredi, USA

In this presentation, the project of Cultural Studies is thought as a
diasporic practice. Cultural Studies is, for this reason, conceived as
a series of dislocations, as events that need to be read "out of
context". In crafting this presentation through the prism of the
African diaspora, the intention here is to complicate how race is
understood in relation to Cultural Studies and, as importantly, to
suggest how by reading the diaspora Cultural Studies might produce a
different understanding of race. This presentation culminates with a
brief reading of (South) African author, now resident in Australia, JM
Coetzee's most recent novel, Slow Man, in which the very notion of the
(African) diaspora is complicated by race -- by the invocation of the
Balkan diaspora; by the residual presence of that Australian presence
that "haunts" Coetzee's work, Elizabeth Costello and her critique of the
African diaspora; and, by the ways in which "whiteness" can be said to
dis- and rearticulate the very nature of the African diaspora.
