Postgraduate and Early Career Researcher Development Node presents:

 

PLANNING YOUR RESEARCH CAREER

 

an open seminar with Professor Vera Mackie from the University of Melbourne

 

 

This informal seminar is open to all interested postgrads, Early Career Researchers (ECRs), casual staff and those wishing to develop a research career in fields involving cultural research. 

 

Some of the issues this seminar will consider include: 

 

*	What are the expectations for applicants to academic jobs and research fellowships? 
*	What are the elements of a good track record? 
*	What makes a good CV? 
*	The place of publications in your CV/track record; 
*	Strategies for getting published; 
*	Setting your career goals: short-term, mid-term, long-term; 
*	The importance of mentors, peer mentors and networks.

 Vera Mackie is professor in the Department of History at The University of Melbourne, and currently holds an ARC Australian Professorial Fellowship. Her current research interests focus on the Politics of Visual Culture in Modern Japan and the Cultural History of the Body in Modern Japan. In previous positions, she has gained teaching, research, administrative and supervisory experience in the fields of Japanese language and linguistics, Japanese history, gender studies and cultural studies. Her publications include Gurôbaruka to Jendâ Hyôshô [Globalisation and Representations of Gender], Feminism in Modern Japan: Citizenship, Embodiment and Sexuality, Relationships: Japan and Australia, 1870s-1950s, Human Rights and Gender Politics: Asia-Pacific Perspectives, and Creating Socialist Women in Japan: Gender, Labour and Activism, 1900-1937.
