> This lecture will focus on the implications for the citizen-consumer of deregulation and technology change. It will also examine how niche consumer TV channels focusing on life style, consumption and basic information (eg weather and food channels) are beginning to introduce key contextual and background information, complicating the notion that they play merely to consumerist lifestyles.

> Toby Miller is Professor of English, Sociology, and Women's Studies, and Director of the Program in Film & Visual Culture at the University of California, Riverside. His teaching and research cover media, sport, labor, gender, race, citizenship, politics, and cultural policy. Toby is the author and editor of over 20 books, and has published essays in more than 30 journals. His current research covers the success of Hollywood overseas, the links between culture and citizenship, and anti-Americanism. Professor Miller is based in Brisbane during April-May 2006 as a Queensland Government Smart Returns Fellow and a QUT Vice-Chancellor's Distinguished Visitor. This will be his only public talk in Melbourne.
