"Is Schizoanalysis of Cinema Possible?"
Immediately after he completed the second volume of Capitalism and Schizophrenia with Félix Guattari, Deleuze wrote two of the most influential books in film studies yet written: Cinema 1 and Cinema 2. What is both surprising and intriguing about this sequence of events is that the later books appear not to owe anything to the schizoanalytic project he developed with Guattari. There is almost no cross-over of terminology and on first reading it even appears that there is no cross-over of conceptual architecture. Yet, given that the ambition of that project was to offer a theory of practically everything, it is virtually impossible for the cinema books not to be somehow informed by it. Drawing on the work of several key names in the field of Deleuze studies, this symposium will ask: "Is a schizoanalysis of cinema possible?"
