[csaa-forum] Sanctuary and Security #1: Gender, Race and Public Space

The Sanctuary and Security seminar series will begin with a forum on 
Gender, Race and Public Space at the University of Technology, Sydney on 
Thursday 23 March. The forum brings together a range of perspectives and 
experiences on questions of gender, religion, racism and public space 
with a particular focus on Muslim women in contemporary Australia. 
Speakers will address issues such as:

    * the intersection of gender, religion and race in contests over
      public space
    * the impacts of the Cronulla riot
    * violence and discrimination directed at Muslim women during the
      'war on terror'
    * public safety, visibility and isolation
    * agency, advocacy and activism in Muslim women's networks


Speakers include: Stephanie Donald (UTS), Maha Krayem Abdo (United 
Muslim Women Association), Heather Goodall (UTS), Wafa Zaim (UMWA), 
Hadijat Lawal (Illawarra Multicultural Services) screening Illawarra 
PhotoVoice project, Scott Poynting (UWS). <>

The series is associated with the recently funded ARC project on Muslim 
Women's Networks in Contemporary Australia which will be introduced by 
Stephanie Donald and Maha Abdo. <> 

The seminar series will include diverse disciplinary perspectives in 
order to build a  conversation across spectra of belief, scholarship and 
ethnic identification and to build  new paradigms of engagement and 
learning for Muslim women in Australia and internationally. <> 

Seminars will be held monthly. Upcoming speakers in 2006 include: Jamila 
Hussain, Faikah Behardien, Alia Imtoual, Caitlin B de Wall, Aneela 
Babar, Tanja Dreher, Vicky Sentas, Sharon Chalmers, Anisa Buckley, Silma

Room 238 is on Level 2 of Building 4 which is entered via Thomas St, 
near the intersection with Harris St, Ultimo, very close to Central 
railway station. After alighting at Central Station take the eastern 
exits to Railway Square/George Street. Turn left at Railway Square and 
walk one block to the intersection with Harris St. To reach Building 4, 
turn right (north) into Harris St and then left into Thomas St. The 
entrance to Building 4 is on your left hand side. A map of the campus is
