> The paper is concerned with the design of interactive art systems intended for display in public locations. It reviews approaches to interactive art systems and discusses the issue of creative engagement with them by the active audience. A range of artist-in-residence studies is described and some of the resulting artwork shown. An approach to elaborating a model of creative engagement is described and exploratory work on its refinement is reported.

Recently, he has also shown his collaborative work with sound artist Mark Fell in the White Noise exhibition at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (for which he co-edited the catalogue), at the Art Exhibitions of SIGRAPH 2004, Los Angeles, and GRAPHITE 2004, Singapore, and, for example, at SONAR in Barcelona. He runs a major group concerned with practice-based research in art and technology at the University of Technology, Sydney where he is Professor of Computation and Creative Media. His book "On New Construct in Art" was recently published by Artists Bookworks, Sussex, UK.
