I don't want to enter a fight between people who have led the field for  
many years. I wouldn't begin to feel qualified to do that. For the  
record I have worked with / for practically everyone in this  
conversation, in my peripatetic way, and I am sure that I have learnt  
as much from each interlocutor as I have from other mentors in the  
states and the UK.  I may agree more or differently with different  
people - but that is as much about personal politics as it is about the  
position of a discipline which should be, and is quite various.
If this is really a discussion about the politics of University funding  
(particularly at a research level) then we should badge it as such and  
call in the pollies to listen.
But I would just like to remind the conversation of the Indigenous and  
Asian-Australian cultural studies theorists (maybe that it is too  
specific - maybe we should say cultural research as the network is now  
called), and the contribution they make not just as Australians but as  
part of regional and global networks of alternative knowledge  
hierarchies which are as least as important as the established  
(generally US centric) discourses of alterity. And, of course,all of   
you guys have all been instrumental in encouraging and shaping these  
directions.
