The National Centre in HIV Social Research (NCHSR) is proud to announce:

StigmaPleasurePractice, the 9th Social Research Conference on HIV, Hepatitis
C and Related Diseases.

19th-21st April 2006
University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia

StigmaPleasurePractice will provide a forum to present innovative, reflexive
research on sex and drugs. Sex and drug practices are socially produced yet
are often constituted as personal, private, illicit or even shameful. We
therefore encourage researchers, educators, practitioners and activists to
consider how issues of stigma, pleasure, health and harm intersect in work
on sex and drugs, and how we reconcile or evade these issues. How do we
address health risks and harms without intensifying the stigma of pleasures
on the margin?

Confirmed speakers:
Tim Rhodes, Imperial College London
Ingrid van Beek, Medically Supervised Injecting Centre
Gary Dowsett, Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health & Society
Annie Madden, Australian Injecting & Illicit Drug Users' League
David Moore, National Drug Research Institute
Christos Tsiolkas, author of Loaded and Dead Europe

Conference Themes
- Stigma and shame in relation to current sex and drug practices
- Pleasure, affect and agency within stigmatised and marginalised
communities
- Stigma, pleasure and individual responsibility
- Researching marginalised practices without reinforcing stigma
- Distinguishing between pleasure and harm
- Averting stigma and promoting health

We also invite speakers to address continuing social research issues in
relation to HIV, hepatitis C and related diseases, with reference to the
main conference themes.
