I'm not sure that it's convincing to say that it's about 'consumerism
rather than class'. Because of course there is *good* consumerism (ie,
paying to go to an art cinema to see an anti-capitalist documentary; or
even, as a previous writer suggested, buying books rather than plasma
screen TVs - !). And then there is *bad* consumerism (which is - surprise -
buying the kinds of objects traditionally associated with working-class
culture).
