The Convergence of Digital Cinema and New Media Art
Practice
Professor Jeffrey Shaw,
Executive Director UNSW iCinema Centre, Sydney
Despite the cinema's heritage of technological and creative diversity, it
is Hollywood that has come to define its dominant forms of production and
distribution, its technological apparatus and its narrative forms. But the
hegemony of Hollywood's modalities of movie making is being increasingly
challenged as the new digital
modalities for the production and presentation of cinematic content are
setting up highly appropriate platforms for the further evolution of the
traditions of independent, experimental cinema. In his presentation Jeffrey
Shaw will discuss the convergent multiplicity of
new techniques of representation and intercommunication and evaluate
specific examples of current art practice that exemplify the emergent
identities of the digitally expanded cinema.
Jeffrey Shaw
Jeffrey Shaw has been at the forefront of the practice and
theory of interactive digital cinema for over two decades.
He uses complex technologies to create large-scale immersive
landscapes, fantastic spaces that explore the meeting point
between touch, movement and imagination. Before becoming
Professor of Media Art at UNSW, he was Director of the
Research Institute for Visual Media at ZKM, the Centre for
Art and Media at Karlsruhe in Germany. His current projects
include Conversations, TVisionarium and Eavesdrop;
his latest book is Future Cinema: The Cinematic
Imaginary after Film.
