An Analysis of Cultural Planning and Placemaking in Australia

The majority of local governments in Australia are developing cultural
plans and placemaking strategies. Despite claims that cultural planning
can
achieve an ever expanding range of social, aesthetic, economic and
cultural
objectives, there has been little systematic academic research
investigating these claims, their framing assumptions, or the shifting
relations between place, social change, culture, art and policy within
specific localities. Through a combination of policy analysis, case
study
and ethnographic research, this PhD will undertake a study of cultural
planning at both the micro and macro levels. In particular, there will
be a
specific focus on the NSW regional city of Newcastle and its
deindustrialising, working class suburb of Mayfield. The PhD candidate
will
work in an experienced interdisciplinary team, developing a range of
research skills. The successful applicant should have Honours 1
equivalent
qualifications in Sociology, Cultural Studies, Human Geogra!
phy or allied field.
