Apologies for cross-posting
Dear colleagues,
I would like to invite you to the opening of an exhibition at the
Fairfield City Museum and Gallery that is the result of a collaboration,
funded by a UWS Community Grant, between Fairfield Council and UWS
researchers Dr George Morgan, Associate Professor Scott Poynting and Dr
Cristina Rocha. Entitled Culture and Cultivation: Backyards in
Fairfield, it focuses on the migration stories and backyard creative
endeavours of a number of residents in the Fairfield municipality.
Located in Sydney's west, Fairfield is the most culturally diverse area
in Australia with 53% of the population of non-English speaking
background and representing over 160 nations. The exhibition features a
range of people with diverse ethnic affiliations and illustrates the
extraordinary things they do in their backyards - from growing unusual
plants, to building backyard museums or sculpture gardens, to baking
food in outdoor ovens, producing wine, bottling tomatoes or herbal
remedies. In each case we find cross-cultural negotiations between
homeland and Australia, a combination of elements of tradition and
modernity. The exhibition will feature photographs, backyard artefacts
and plants and will tell the migration stories of those whose backyard
creativity is featured. It opens on August 8th and runs until October
10th.
