Migration Research Winter Workshop for Doctoral Students
29-30 July 2004, Canberra

The ARC supported Migration Research Network is now calling for
applications from PhD students enrolled at Australian universities to
participate in its inaugural Winter Workshop for Doctoral Students.

The aim of the Workshop is to assist doctoral students working on
migration related topics to develop their academic expertise and
scholarly networks. It will do this by providing an opportunity for
students working on a topic related to migration and its impact to
discuss their research with peers and mentors. Mentors will be prominent
Network members including James Jupp, Mandy Thomas and the Network
Convenor, Christine Inglis. Participants will also be introduced to
important research resources which, while based in Canberra, can be
accessed from interstate.

What is the Migration Research Network?
The MRN brings together Australian researchers working on issues related
to migration and its diverse impact on areas including incorporation,
ethnic relations, health, education and national identity. By bringing
together researchers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds with policy
makers and key stakeholders in the community, the MRN aims to support
and enhance research and understanding surrounding these key issues in
Australia and internationally.

Who can apply to participate?

* PhD students enrolled in any faculty at an Australian university
whose PhD topic examines an issue related to migration and its impact on
society.
* Applicants should have completed at least the equivalent of 2
semesters full-time of their PhD program and not be planning to submit
their thesis until 2005.

What is involved in participating in the Workshop?

* Successful applicants will come to Canberra from the 29-30th
July 2004
* They will make a brief presentation of their thesis topic, its
conceptualisation, methodology and, if appropriate, initial findings for
discussion with the other Workshop participants and mentors. By the 14th
July all participants should submit a 5000 word paper for
pre-circulation to other Workshop participants.( Note that the Workshop
will be very intensive and may involve evening sessions.)
* Participants are expected to stay in the university style Workshop
accommodation to facilitate discussion and networking with other
participants. This accommodation may be in a University flat shared with
other participants.
* Visits will also be arranged to major national organisations and
government departments for briefings about resources and opportunities
for developing links with key stakeholders.
* The MRN hopes to be able to support the cost of travel and
accommodation from the home university to Canberra for a maximum of 10
PhD students. The final number will depend on quality of applications
and the total travel costs for all successful applicants. In some cases
partial financial support may be offered.
* Offers of places in the workshop will be made by the beginning
of July.

How do I apply to attend the Winter Workshop?

* Prepare a 1500-2000 word paper which outlines:
- the subject of your thesis
- its conceptual framework and methodology
- the benefits you hope to gain from participating in the Winter
Workshop.
* Arrange for your Thesis Supervisor to send a brief reference about the
quality of your work and what they consider the benefits you can obtain
from participation in the Workshop. In case the Network is not able to
offer full travel and accommodation assistance to all successful
applicants could the letter also indicate the level of financial support
which the university could offer to the attendee.
* Your letter of application should also contain your name, full
contact details, PhD enrolment details: i.e.institution, faculty and
student number.
*    E-Mail your application to:-
