RESEARCH FELLOW APPOINTMENT IN CULTURAL STUDIES AT ASIA RESEARCH
INSTITUTE

The Asia Research Institute (ARI) at the National University of
Singapore invites applications for a 2-year position in
communications within the Cultural Studies research cluster. This
position will also carry an administrative component.

An emergent focus of scholarship in Asia, Cultural Studies
consciously challenges disciplinary boundaries to address new topics,
issues and concerns thrown up by rapid globalization and
technological changes. ARI is interested in new understandings of the
everyday life cultural practices of contemporary Asia.

Applicants would need a strong research record commensurate with an
earlier career stage. The successful applicant will be
expected to pursue his/her own research in the area of Communications
and Cultural Studies in Asia at the highest level. Stress in
research will be on Southeast Asia, but work in East and South Asia
is not precluded. Cross-disciplinary work will be viewed
   favourably.

The successful candidate will be appointed on a two-year, renewable
contract. This is a research appointment. The applicant would
also be expected to assist the Director in overseeing the Institute's
publications, including newsletter, annual report, Working
Paper Series and other publications which may be developed and also
assist the Director in promoting the public profile of the
Institute, including relations with the media, government and
international agencies, and funding bodies.

Interested applicants are invited to email/facsimile/mail their
curriculum vitae, a description of the research program envisaged,
and the names and addresses of at least three referees, to the
address below, by 30 April 2004.

The Asia Research Institute is a university-level institute
established in July 2001 as one of the strategic initiatives of the
National University of Singapore (NUS). The mission of the
Institute is to provide a world-class focus and resource for research
on the Asian region, located at one of its communication hubs. It covers
the social sciences broadly defined, and
especially interdisciplinary frontiers between and beyond social
science disciplines. Through frequent provision of short-term research
appointments it seeks to be a place of encounters
between the region and the world, supporting conferences, lectures
and graduate study at the highest level. Professor Anthony Reid became
the initial director in July 2002; Professor
Gavin Jones was appointed in 2003 to head the research focus on 'the
changing family in Asia'; and Professor Chua Beng Huat in 2004 to head
the cultural studies focus. A search is
in progress for a third focus on 'religion and globalisation'.
