Pas de deux for DSO and DCC
at the newlook amphitheatre

Darwin Symphony Orchestra will stage the first in the 2005 Symphony in the
Gardens series of Dry Season concerts at the upgraded Gardens Amphitheatre
this month.

The concert, Invitation to the Dance, will be held on Saturday 28 May at
6.30pm.

DSO Artistic Director Martin Jarvis said the DSO welcomed the upgrade,
which made the facilities "far more user-friendly".

"Planning and construction undertaken by the Darwin City Council over the
past eight months has led to extension of the stage, special lighting
trusses and several new options for sound systems," he said.

"Obvious features include the magnificent metal structures extending across
the front of the amphitheatre. These give a new perspective to the original
building and create an ideal welcoming ambience. The public will also
benefit from the new permanent ticket office on the main approach to the
entry gates where EFTPOS facilities will be available.

"The expansive lawns offer a great space for the orchestra's audience -
including families and interstate visitors all with their picnics, eskies
and rugs. As the south starts to shiver, the DSO's Dry Season Symphony in
The Gardens is a great advertisement for the merits of living in the Top
End."

Invitation to the Dance will include a pas de deux from The Nutcracker
Suite performed by guest artists Matthew Lawrence and Amber Scott from The
Australian Ballet.

"The repertoire contains a fabulously varied selection of dance numbers
from romantic tango to the pas de deux. A 'waltzing cat' will also appear
in the first half of the evening. Strauss polkas, with accompanying
fireworks, will provide the perfect finale."

Tickets are $20 (concessions available), from Darwin Entertainment Centre
box office open 10am to 5.30pm weekdays, 8980 3333, also from Cover to
Cover Books Palmerston, Customer Service Desk, Casuarina and from 5.30pm at
the gate. For full details, phone 8946 6488.
