Kolectomania at Charles Darwin

One man's junk is another man's treasure, so they say . . . and there can
be no better example of this than an exhibition opening at Charles Darwin
University tomorrow (Thursday).

Ceramics, plastics, mutilated toys, postcards, playing cards, packaging and
other everyday detritus
will go on show in Kolectomania, a uniquely bizarre - or maybe, bazaar -
three-dimensional exhibition.

Students in the visual arts program in the School of Creative Arts and
Humanities (with some help from their lecturers) have devised the
extraordinary collections of three of Darwin's most successful young
artists Franck Gohier, Tobias Richardson and Rob Brown for display in the
foyer of the Fine Arts building.

One student, Melissa Macklin, said: "Never again shall we underestimate the
supremacy of junk! If ever you ponder where artistic enlightenment might
spring from, Kolectomania provides unrivalled insight into an artist's view
of the world."

Kolectomania also offers the opportunity to view the sort of art that an
artist collects. Students have selected a number of works from printmaking
lecturer, Neil Emmerson's private collection of contemporary Australian art
to show in The Gallery.

These are the work of his fellow contemporary artists; a slice of
Australia's choicest from the 1990s. "Many of these artists have never had
their work shown in Darwin: this is a do-not-miss viewing of the country's
finest," Melissa said.

In addition, students, together with CDU art curator, Anita Angel, have put
together a self-guided tour of work by Indigenous and non-Indigenous
artists in the library. Copies of this self-guided tour will be available
in The Gallery, in the foyer of Building 14 and at the library.

Melissa added: "This is a unique opportunity to view the junk that can
inspire art; the art that inspires other artists; and the art an
institution such as a university chooses to display as inspiration to its
students."

Kolectomania, a series of simultaneous exhibitions at the School of
Creative Arts, Charles Darwin University, Casuarina Campus, opens on
Thursday May 19 at 6pm, in The Gallery (Building 12), the Fine Arts
Building Foyer (Building 14) and the Library (Building 38). Admission is
free and the public is welcome. The exhibition will be open weekdays
from 12 noon - 4pm and continues until June 3.
